Welcome to Shugoryuu Dojo. Our name in Japanese means Guardian Dragon, and as such, we endeavour to practise our art form of karate – with that in mind. We study karate with respect to the Sensei’s that influenced us, but with the knowledge of modern sport science to complement and enhance our sport. Our dojo operates differently to other clubs; we encourage family participation and a love for the art form, with the self-defence and fighting skills that accompany our teachings.
Our Martial Art in more detail: Sensei Gerhard studied under Hanshi Hans Haupt for many years in the Tenshinkan style – a style that forms part of the Shotokan family – where our World Chief Instructor in Japan is a student of the father of modern karate – Gichin Funakoshi.
The style teaches a more evasive movement philosophy – when compared to other Shotokan based styles, benefiting all – but especially children and women – in its way of teaching.
Our training is focused on physical development, with the emphasis kata’s, kumite, self-defence (with techniques based in Aikido and Nin-jitsu), movement and training patterns and for the advanced students, traditional weapon training such as the Kon (Bo) and Katana.
About Sensei Gerhard:
Gerhard started training at the age of 9, and has never stopped. Three decades later, he has trained with some of the best local and international karate masters, and has a passion for the life skills and values that the sport teaches, as well as understanding the huge movement-, health- and learning benefits of practising the sport. His wife, Sensei Erin, children and senior students assist him in class.

Gradings and Championships:
Sensei Gerhard will do all the gradings up to first Dan. Thereafter, we will use Japanese accredited examiners to ensure our belts are internationally recognised. There will be two grading weeks per year.
Championships are only for a select few karateka’s, and even then, it’s a very subjective judging process. We thus discourage too much emphasis on competition. Once a karateka excels and is a senior enough belt, we will advise the best platforms to compete on.
Thank you for taking the time to look at our way of practising karate. We look forward to this journey with you!
